Striking in Bruneau's oeuvre are the series he made on diverse subjects. For example, his portraits of famous writers, people with hats, nose-pickers, his brightly colored female portraits, or his series around the figure of pin-up Betty Page, of whom he made over 200 drawings and dozens of paintings. For a long time, Bruneau was associated with writers' portraits. With Betty Page, a formidable female competition crept into his work. The idea came from his then gallerist Cis van Kets. In the months that followed, Bruneau painted dozens of works inspired by original studio photos. About this, Bruneau said: 'I have nothing against the Pop Art technique of adopting images, but that's not how I work. You have to supplement the photos, improve them. Many of those photos are technically clumsy. The pose is also often awkward. I took the artistic freedom to correct Betty Page.'
